Jayes George William, Able Seaman, 191019. (RFR/PO/B/4071). H.M.S "Good Hope", Royal Navy, who was killed in action on Sunday 1st November 1914. Aged 34. Son of George and Hephzibah Jayes of Leicester; Husband of Ethel Towe (formerly Jayes), of 92, Willow Bridge Street, Leicester.

H.M.S. Good Hope - Battle of Coronel - 1st November 1914.

The Battle of Coronel, off the coast of central Chile was the naval engagement between the British armoured cruisers, Good Hope and Monmouth, the light cruiser Glasgow and the armed merchant cruiser Otranto, against the German ships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Leipzig, Dresden and Nürnberg.

Both H.M.S. Good Hope (Approx. 900 men) and H.M.S. Monmouth (Approx. 700 men), were both sunk with the loss of all hands.

This battle was the first British naval defeat of the First World War.
